手の掌面にある靭帯の一つで、遠位手根骨と中手骨底のを結んでいる。相対する靭帯として、背側には背側手根中手靭帯が存在する。
「Rauber-Kopsch解剖学」には以下のような解説が見られる。
「掌側手根中手靱帯では横走する線維の方が遠位方へ向う線維よりも強くて，その一部は放線状掌側手根靱帯の形成に参加している．背側手根中手靱帯は短くて丈夫な線維束の集りで，主として遠位方へ走っている．」
また、「Wikipedia」には以下のような解説が見られる。
「The Palmar carpometacarpal ligaments (or volar) are a series of bands on the palmar surface of the carpometacarpal joints that connect the carpal bones to the second through fifth metacarpal bones. The second metacarpal is connected to the trapezium. The third metacarpal is connected to the trapezium, to the capitate, and to the hamate. The fourth and fifth metacarpals are connected to the hamate.The palmar carpometacarpal ligaments have a somewhat similar arrangement to the dorsal carpometacarpal ligaments, with the exception of those of the third metacarpal, which are three in number:a lateral one from the greater multangular, situated superficial to the sheath of the tendon of the Flexor carpi radialis;and intermediate one from the capitate;and a medial one from the hamate.」
「掌側手根中手靭帯が付着する骨」だが、「日本人体解剖学 (上巻)
」と「船戸和弥のホームページ」では具体的な骨名の言及はない。そこで
・「背側手根中手靭帯に対応している」ということであれば、第1中手骨底には付着していないと思われるが、「プロメテウス解剖学アトラス」に掲載されているイラストでは、大菱形骨と第1中手骨底を結んでいる靭帯が確認できる。（※以下のイラストは「プロメテウス解剖学アトラス」を参考に作成している）
また、「Wikipedia」（上記の英文）では、具体的にどの骨とどの骨が掌側手根中手靭帯によって結ばれているのかに言及していて「 the second through fifth metacarpal bones.」とあり、第1中手骨には付着していないという説明になっている。説明文において「trapezium(大菱形骨)」という単語が出てくるが、おそらく「tarapezoid(小菱形骨)」の間違いではないかと思われる。そこを修正してまとめたのが以下になる。
