「 日本人体解剖学 (上巻) 」では、肋間神経の枝を大きく交通枝と筋枝に分け、筋枝をさらに以下のように細かく分けている。

「 Lateral cutaneous branches (rami cutanei laterales) are derived from the intercostal nerves, about midway between the vertebræ and sternum ; they pierce the Intercostales externi and Serratus anterior, and divide into anterior and posterior branches.
The lateral cutaneous branch of the last thoracic nerve is large, and undivided. It perforates the internal and the external oblique muscles, descends over the iliac crest in front of the lateral cutaneous branch of the iliohypogastric nerve, and is distributed to the skin of the front part of the gluteal muscles, some of its filaments extending as low as the greater trochanter of the femur. 」

「外側皮枝は肋間隙のおよそ中央で肋間神経から出て，前腋窩線と前正中線との中間で外肋間筋を貫き，下部のものは外腹斜筋を貫いて皮膚の下に出る．そのさい第1から第7までの外側皮枝は外側鋸筋の尖頭のあいだから現われ，第8～第12の外側皮枝は肋骨に停止する広背筋の尖頭の前に現われる．Th XIIの外側皮枝は外斜腹筋を貫く．
これらの外側皮枝のすべてが広背笏の肋骨尖頭の毎域で2枝に分れ，これらの枝は皮膚の下でたがいに反対の方向に離れてゆく．すなわち太い方の前枝Rami ventralesは前方に，後力の後枝Rami dorsalesは後方にすすむ．Th IIの外側皮枝の後枝は上述の肋間上腕神経N. intercostobrachialisである(図237)．この神経はときにはTh IあるいはTh IIIから出ていることがある．日本人ではTh IIから出るのが男では96.5%，女では94.7%である(Hirosawa 1931)．
ThII～Th VIの前枝は大胸筋の縁を廻って内側に走り，乳頭までの皮膚に分布する．第4から第6までの前枝からはなお外側乳腺枝Rami mammarii lateralesという枝が乳腺に達している. Th VII～Th XIの前枝は腹直筋のおよそ外側縁までの範囲で腹壁の皮膚に分布する．そのほかにTh XIIの前枝は1枝を腸骨稜を越えて中臀筋を被う皮膚に送っている．ときにはこの枝が大転子のあたりまで迫跡できる． 」
